Mages, Non-Humans, The Witcher 3 and Trump

This is the site you see when you finally get to Novigrad. I took great joy in killing the fucker who did this.

The Witcher 3 is a kick ass game. I watched my husband beat it and I'm working on beating it myself. One quest revolves around a little town Novigrad. Novigrad is in a state of unrest due the fear control that the Church Of The Eternal Fire has over the city. I won't get into the Church Of The Eternal Fire but they believes that magic users are evil. When you first enter the city you walk into a witch burning. One is a shape shiftier who wanted nothing more than to live a normal life, the other is a sorceress. Gerlat watches, powerless as these two people are burned alive. You meet up with you past lover(a romance if you so chose) Triss. Triss runs an underground railroad. She smuggled magic users out of city, you do a mission with her to help her smuggle a young man out of the city.

As a pagan I related to the mages trapped in Novaigrad, they lived in the slums and had to beg for money. Being outed as a mage meant death, or worse. While I have never had to go through anything like that its always been a fear of mine. I was lucky and I was never really bullied or picked on because of my religion, despite growing up in a very Christian area. While playing though The Witcher I saw my own fears in those mages. They were being bullied, picked on and even killed just because of who they are, even though they had done nothing wrong. All of them were being judged because of a few terrible people, all of them were attacked and killed because of fear control.

It was shortly after this that I took a break from the game. It wasn't because of the themes in the game, I had just burnt myself out on it. However my husband kept playing and I got to see him beat the game. After he got all the mages out of Novaigrad, I though that all would be well(I'm new to The Witcher series). At the end of the game when he returned to Novigrad we were greeted by elves, dwarfs and shapshifters. Which would be happy and nice but they were dead. And headless. And it was only their heads on poles that greeted us.  We had saved the mages but with the mages gone the Church had nothing to control people with. Humans are controlled by fear and fear things that are different than them. With the mages gone, the Church attacked the non humans, only because they are different.  This one moment in gaming opened my eyes and changed how I viewed the world. Maybe people are picking on me. No one is trying to deport me, no one is telling me I should leave the country. But lets think about the non-humans. When you talk to them, most of them aren't too worried. Non-humans are bullied in the city but they aren't often killed unless they are found to be using magic. The mages, in a sick way, where like a shield for them. As long as the mages were around , the non-humans were safer.

This is why Trump scares me. He has been outspoken about his dislike of Muslims and Immigrants Trump has been back and forth on his stance on both. He's said that he wants to ban all Muslims and then switched that he just wanted to ban them from moving to the US if they come from country that aren't our allies. Trump has also said terrible things about women and LGBT groups. I know that Trump isn't killing anybody, he's not burning Muslims at the stake or putting the heads of gays on poles. A lot of you may think "He's saying these things about other groups but I'm not Muslims or Gay or Female so it doesn't effect me." And your right, it doesn't. The attacks against the mages didn't effect the non-humans either. Until the mages are gone, then they were the first targets. Maybe you aren't in a group that Trump has target with this racist, homophobic, sexist words. You aren't a mage. But if all the mages are gone, dealt with, deported whatever words you want to use. Then the mages won't be around or they will be silenced. If you are a non-human you're in danger next. Being a "non-human" he scares me. I have a family of "non-human", my friends are "non-human" We don't fit the target crowd for Trump. We are the mages, we are the non-humans, we are in Novigrad and we are scared.
